Samsung Galaxy S10’s Exynos 9820 SoC With Integrated NPU, 8K Video Recording Launched

Samsung Galaxy S10's Exynos 9820 SoC With Integrated NPU, 8K Video Recording Launched

Samsung as expected on Wednesday unveiled the Exynos 9 Series 9820 SoC based on the 8nm LPP (Low Power Plus) FinFET process. This premium SoC is expected be integrated into the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy Note 10 flagships next year. The processor is claimed to reduce power consumption by 10 percent compared to 10nm LPP process, comes with an integrated neural processing unit (NPU), a custom tri-cluster CPU, Mali-G76 MP12 GPU, support for 8K video recording, and an advanced image signal processor (ISP) as well.

The biggest highlight of the Samsung Exynos 9 Series 9820 SoC is the integrated NPU – a component that specialises in processing artificial intelligence tasks. Samsung notes that the NPU allows the processor to perform AI-related functions seven times faster than its predecessor, thereby enhancing AI capabilities of a mobile device. The SoC integrates a 4th generation custom CPU that consists of two custom cores, two ARM Cortex-A75 cores, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores. This new custom CPU is touted to boost multi-core performance by 15 percent, single core performance by up to 20 percent, and boost power efficiency by up to 40 percent when compared to the Exynos 9810.

The Exynos 9820 SoC bears a LTE-Advanced Pro modem that supports LTE Category 20, and claims to offer downlink speed of up to 2.0Gbps with 8x carrier aggregation (CA) and uplink speed of up to 316Mbps. The modem supports 4×4 Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO), 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), and Enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access (eLAA) technology.

The SoC integrates the Mali-G76 MP12 GPU, and because of its wider execution engines, it offers up to 40 percent performance improvement and 35 percent enhancement in power efficiency. The chipset’s ISP supports up to five sensors including an IR sensor, 8K video recording 30fps, 4K UHD video recording at 150fps, and uses the physically unclonable function (PUF) for added security.

Furthermore, it supports up to 4K UHD (2160×4096 pixels) and WQUXGA (2400×3840 pixels) displays, UFS 3.0 and UFS 2.1 storage, LPDDR4x memory, up to 22-megapixel rear and front cameras, and if it’s a dual camera setup then it supports up to two 16-megapixel lenses. The new Samsung Exynos 9829 SoC is expected to go in mass production by the end of the year.

White Samsung Galaxy Note9 leaks

Samsung announced the Galaxy Note9 in four colors – Copper, Lavender Purple, Blue with a yellow S Pen and the classic Midnight Black. Later a fifth option called Cloud Silver started appearing and now it is up for another leak and color number 6 – White.

The photo was shared by Evan Blass on Twitter who raised his doubts about the originality of the image and even asking for confirmation from arm-chair Photoshop detectives. This led the following Twitter thread into a downward spiral where people were frantically looking for mistakes instead of agreeing that Samsung might indeed launch a White Galaxy Note9 smartphone.

This isn’t the first time we see the Note series getting a white makeover. Back at the beginning of the year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note8 PyeongChang 2018 Limited Edition as part of the partnership with the International Olympic Committee for the Winter Olympics. The phone did not make it to retail stores and was exclusive for IOC members, staff, and of course, athletes.

Nokia 6.1 Plus Hide Notch option is coming back

The notch was introduced in September 2017 with the iPhone X, and since then it has been a polarizing topic about aesthetics and functionality. While some phones natively had a toggle to have a black bar on top, others were forced to stay with the cutout. The Nokia 6.1 Plus introduced the feature but was later removed by Google, since the HMD phone is on the Android One program.

According to sources, you can put the notch back on, but only in Developers Mode, which leads to the assumption, the toggle might make it to all end users as a default option.

To hide the notch on the Nokia 6.1 Plus, you have to visit Settings, and then tap on About Phone. Scroll down to the System section and find the Build number. Tap on it seven times and a system message will tell you Developers Mode has now been enabled.

Get back to System and find Developer Options. Inside the menu, you’ll see a toggle called Full Bezel that will make a black bar appear as a background for notifications, system clock, etc.

Of course, to have that, you must’ve already updated the Nokia 6.1 Plus to Android Pie that started rolling out just last week. Other goodies that arrive with the new OS is Adaptive Battery Saving, Google Lens, Digital Wellbeing and the new navigation gestures.

The beta program for the UI, based on Android Pie, began on October 17, and today November 10 was revealed as the global launch date for nine Kirin 970-powered phones.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, took it to Weibo to announce the date for the rollout. According to Chinese sources, the update will be pushed worldwide to all owners of six Huawei phones and three more, operating under the Honor brand. Here’s the full list:

The new Emotion user interface is based on Android Pie and brings better system response time and better smoothness. There is also GPU Turbo 2.0 that focuses on extreme scenarios to push even further optimization for mobile gaming. Since EMUI is based on the latest OS by Google, it will also have Adaptive Battery and Screen and Android Dashboard that monitors screen usage.

Telecom Operators Inform DoT of Sites to Test Alternate KYC Process

Telecom Operators Inform DoT of Sites to Test Alternate KYC Process

Telecom service providers have informed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) about the sites to excercise the Proof of Concept (POC) of the new non-Aadhaar KYC process.

Each operator would carry out the process at two sites, as per a DoT notification.

The notification dated November 6 said that Bharti Airtel would carry out the process at Delhi and Meerut while Reliance Jio has listed two sites in Mumbai. Vodafone Idea, the newly merged entity would perform the exercise at Delhi and Baramati in Maharastra.

The other private player Tata Teleservices has listed two sites in Haryana for the Proof of Concept exercise.

Among the public sector players, BSNL would carry out the process at two sites in Telangana, while MTNL has listed Mumbai and Delhi for the same.

“Based on the POC results, further directions for any change in the process, if any, will be issued on the subject,” the notification said.

As per the alternate digital KYC process proposed by the telecom industry, the Customer Appliation Form (CAF) is to be embedded with live photograph of subscriber along with the original proof of indentity (POI) and proof of address (POA) document thereby digitizing the end-to-end process, it said.

According to the department, the entire process shall only be used through the authenticated applications hosted by the licensees.

DoT further said that “only two mobile conections shall be provided per day per POI/POA document to a customer by a licensee”. The proposed process would be applicatble to each connection, it added.

The DoT had asked the telecom operators to be ready with the alternate KYC process by November 5, in line with the Supreme Court’s verdict on September 26, in which the apex court disallowed private entities from possessing the Aadhaar details of their customers.

Apple Announces Free Repairs for Some Faulty iPhone X and 13-Inch MacBook Pro Units

Apple Announces Free Repairs for Some Faulty iPhone X and 13-Inch MacBook Pro Units

Apple Inc. disclosed a pair of issues affecting two of its more popular products: the iPhone X ₹ 75,999 and the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The Cupertino, California-based technology giant said Friday the screen on some iPhone X units doesn’t respond or responds intermittently when touched. The company also said some units could have displays that react even when they aren’t touched. The iPhone X went on sale last November and was discontinued when the iPhone XS ₹ 99,900 and iPhone XR ₹ 76,799 models were introduced in September. Users have reported the touch screen issues online for several months.

Apple also said a “limited number” of 13-inch MacBook Pros have “an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive.” The laptops were sold from June 2017 to June 2018 with 128 gigabytes or 256 GB of storage and no Touch Bar, Apple said in a note to customers. The company recommends affected users have their laptops “serviced as soon as possible.”

In the case of the iPhone X, Apple is offering free screen replacements for the faulty devices, while it is offering free repairs for the MacBook Pros.

Apple hadn’t previously responded to reports of problems with iPhone X screens, but it had opened similar replacement programs in the past for older iPhone models with screen issues, including the iPhone 6.

iPhone XR isn’t selling as well as Apple anticipated, production reportedly cut

Since it’s the cheapest of the new iPhone trio, you’d expect the iPhone XR to be the best selling of the bunch, but apparently that’s not how things work in Apple land.

According to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, the most affordable iPhone of 2018 is definitely not doing as well, sales-wise, as Apple anticipated it would. This has led the company to cancel a so called “production boost” for the model.

This move has signaled disappointing demand for the XR, as Apple told Foxconn and Pegatron to halt plans for additional production lines dedicated to it. A source familiar with the matter said: “for the Foxconn side, it first prepared nearly 60 assembly lines for Apple’s XR model, but recently uses only around 45 production lines as its top customer said it does not need to manufacture that many by now”.

Both Foxconn and Pegatron are used by Apple to assemble its smartphones, alongside Wistron. What this means in practice is that Foxconn will make around 100,000 fewer units each day to reflect the new demand outlook. That’s down 20% to 25% compared to Apple’s most optimistic prognosis.

Pegatron apparently faces a similar situation, suspending plans to ramp up production of the iPhone XR and simply awaiting further instructions from Apple at this time. “The utilization for the XR production is not reaching its maximum capacity now”, another source said.

As for Wistron, Apple has asked the smaller iPhone assembler to stand by for rush orders, but supply chain sources claim the company will in fact receive none for the XR this holiday season.

While Apple had great expectations for the iPhone XR, it’s now ordering more iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models from its partners. So it looks like customers are considering those the true lower-priced alternatives to the XS and XS Max, and not the XR. The math makes sense, as they are up to 20% cheaper than the iPhone XR’s starting price of $749.

Suppliers of the 8 and 8 Plus have received a combined order of around 5 million more units. Apple planned to sell 20 million of these two during this quarter, but that number has now jumped to 25 million.

Even if its never ending price creep for its devices is helping Apple boost the average selling price, it looks like some consumers may be put off by how much even the cheapest iPhone of 2018 ended up retailing for.
